In an exclusive interview with The Northern Star Online Newspaper, Kano, Professor Hafiz Abubakar—current member of the governing council at North‑West University, Kano—raised alarm over the origins of the Kwankwasiyya movement.
He recounted that six individuals, including himself and former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, jointly birthed the group, but now feel “betrayed” by Kwankwaso’s claim of sole ownership.
According to Prof. Hafiz, Kwankwasiyya was never meant to be a political party; it was conceived as a civic movement to drive growth, development, and social justice in Kano.
He highlighted that the movement’s red‑cap symbolism and grassroots mobilization have already left a “significant impact on education and political outcomes” across the state.
“Despite its success as a movement, the professor warned that erasing the contributions of the other five founders risks undermining the collective spirit that built Kwankwasiyya”.
He called for recognition of all six architects and for the movement to stay true to its original, non‑partisan mission.
