The President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced that the moon marking the end of Ramadan has not been sighted in Nigeria.
Following the development, the Sultan declared Friday, March 20, 2026, as the day for the celebration of Eid al-Fitr across the country.
The announcement signifies the completion of the 30-day Ramadan fast, in line with Islamic tradition, which requires the physical sighting of the Shawwal crescent to mark the beginning of the new month.
Muslims nationwide are therefore expected to observe Eid-el-Fitr prayers on Friday, bringing to a close the holy month of fasting, prayer, and reflection.
The Sultan also urged the Muslim faithful to continue to uphold the values of peace, unity, and charity practiced during Ramadan.
