A Sokoto-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Musa Lukuwa, defied the Sultan of Sokoto’s directive and led his followers in observing Eid al-Fitr prayers on Tuesday.
The Sultan, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, had declared Wednesday as the official Sallah day, but Lukuwa cited reports of moon sighting in neighboring Niger Republic as justification for the early celebration.
Lukuwa emphasized that his decision was not a disregard for the Sultan’s authority, but rather adherence to religious teachings. He challenged any scholar with a contrary view to a public debate.
