Nasiru Gawuna, former Kano State Deputy Governor and APC governorship candidate, has resigned as Chairman of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), paving the way for his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
This move comes after Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Kano State Governor, also announced his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to join the ADC.
Gawuna’s decision is seen as a strategic realignment, following his recent announcement of support for the Kwankwasiyya movement, which doesn’t represent a political party.
His resignation is in compliance with President Bola Tinubu’s directive requiring political appointees to step down ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Kwankwasiyya movement has directed its members to join the ADC, and Gawuna’s defection is expected to boost the party’s chances in Kano. Kano Analysts/ Public Affairs Commentators, Mal Hassan Fagge, suggest this move could reshape alliances in Kano’s politics, potentially impacting the 2027 governorship election.
