The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has disclosed that the 12 electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) collected a total of N204.7 billion from electricity consumers in January 2026.
The figure reflects revenue recovered from bills issued to customers during the month, as DisCos continue to grapple with billing efficiency and collection shortfalls across the sector. While the total amount billed for January has not been released, the N204.7bn collection underscores the cash flow dynamics of Nigeria’s power distribution segment at the start of 2026.
NERC’s commercial performance reports in recent months have shown DisCos consistently collecting over N190bn monthly, with December 2025 recording N207.49bn from N258.66bn billed. January’s N204.7bn figure suggests a slight month-on-month dip compared to December, continuing a trend of fluctuating collections. 8b2e
The commission has repeatedly flagged gaps between energy received from the grid, energy billed to customers, and actual revenue collected. In October 2025, for instance, DisCos received electricity worth N303.85bn but only collected N210.92bn, leaving a N44.27bn revenue gap. 1e6f
Collection efficiency remains a key metric for NERC, tracking how much of billed revenue DisCos actually recover. In Q3 2025, DisCos recorded 80.70% collection efficiency, collecting N570.25bn out of N706.61bn billed. The January 2026 data will factor into Q1 2026 assessments once billing totals are published. 2872
As Nigerians continue to demand improved power supply and accurate billing, NERC’s monthly factsheets remain critical for transparency on DisCos’ performance, revenue recovery, and the sector’s liquidity challenges.
