An aspirant for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Buji/Birnin Kudu, Jigawa State, Sabi’u Adamu Sagu, has condemned the deaths of 37 youths who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State.
Sagu described youths as the bedrock of society, expressing sadness over the loss of the young lives and calling for accountability over the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
The aspirant said the incident was a matter of serious public concern, stressing that the circumstances leading to the deaths of the detainees must be thoroughly established rather than allowed to remain unresolved.
He therefore called on the Federal Government to ensure a transparent and independent investigation, with anyone found to have been responsible for negligence, misconduct or other wrongdoing brought to justice.
The cause of the deaths has not yet been conclusively established, with forensic and medical examinations ordered.
Sagu, said a credible investigation would not only provide justice for the victims and their families but also help prevent a recurrence, insisting that the protection of human life must remain a fundamental responsibility of security agencies. T
he Federal Government has since constituted a 10-member independent committee to investigate the deaths and determine responsibility where applicable.
