GOMBE — Leadership is often measured by roads constructed, buildings commissioned and offices occupied, but the true test of leadership lies in how many lives it transforms.
This is the philosophy of Dr. Jamil Isyaku Gwamna, the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate in Gombe State, who believes the most enduring legacy is not infrastructure, but people whose talents are nurtured to contribute to society.
For more than two decades, Dr. Gwamna has championed human capital development as the greatest investment any society can make.
His approach has been simple: empower individuals, create opportunities, develop skills and build institutions that outlive generations.
The clearest example was during his leadership in the power sector. Under his watch at Kano Electricity Distribution Company, KEDCO, and through his interventions, over 1,500 indigenes of Gombe State were offered employment across KEDCO and Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, KAEDCO.
These are not just numbers. Behind each job is a story of hope restored and a family supported. Beneficiaries include engineers, technicians, accountants, administrators and customer service professionals who today power homes and businesses across Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna and Gombe States.
According to his spokesperson, Ibrahim Sani Shawai, these professionals have become ambassadors of Gombe beyond its borders. They carry the values and resilience of the state, while their earnings support families back home, fund education, build houses and sustain local businesses in Gombe.
This is the multiplier effect of human capital, the statement noted. When one person is empowered, an entire household benefits. When families become stable, communities become resilient, and when communities prosper, the state and nation advance.
The statement argued that societies that progressed globally did so by prioritizing education, vocational skills, entrepreneurship and employment. Many of the 1,500 beneficiaries have now acquired technical expertise and networks that can be ploughed back into Gombe’s economy in future.
As the debate for 2027 focuses on jobs and economic growth, Gwamna’s camp says jobs should be seen as dignity and stability, not just numbers. His record, they argue, shows that true leadership builds people who in turn build the nation.
“Roads may require repairs, buildings may age and offices may change. But individuals whose lives have been transformed become living testimonies of leadership,” the statement concluded.
