Meanwhile, the leadership of Union led by Prof. Chris Piwuna, ASUU and his members paid solidarity visit to Senator Wamakko’s residence in Asokoro, Abuja.
During the meeting, the union expressed its belief that the Senator’s statesmanship and political influence are essential for rebuilding trust and fostering mutual understanding between the conflicting parties.
Earlier, ASUU has made it clear that its request for intervention is not politically motivated.
Instead, the union aims to achieve a sustainable and permanent solution that would prevent future disruptions to academic activities, thereby safeguarding the interests of students and the education sector at large.
Senator Wamakko is expected to undertake several critical actions as part of his intervention:
He is expected to Initiate discussions between ASUU leadership and the Federal Government to address pressing issues.
Urge both parties to reaffirm their commitment to the implementation of past agreements.
To develop a structured framework for ongoing engagement to mitigate future crises.
To Work with relevant Senate committees and the Ministry of Education to ensure accountability in agreements.
In response to ASUU’s appeal, Senator Wamakko assured the union that he is committed to doing everything within his power to restore normalcy to the situation. His involvement could represent a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s tertiary education history, leading to a permanent resolution that would stabilize public universities, restore confidence in the education sector, and alleviate the socio-economic repercussions of recurring strikes on students, their families, and the nation.
