FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has banned the use of mobile by staff of the Abuja Geographic Information Systems (AGIS) and the Department of Land Administration, effective immediately.
This decision follows a viral video showing Wike in a heated altercation with a naval officer over a disputed land site in Abuja.
The ban applies to officers on Salary Grade Level 14 and below, and those who violate it will face consequences .
The move has sparked outrage among workers and civil rights advocates, who condemn it as “primitive, draconian, and anti-labour”. Critics argue that mobile phones are vital for official communication, and the ban is an overreaction by Wike.
Similarly, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has also condemned Wike’s behavior, describing it as “disrespectful and unbefitting of a public official”.
They’ve urged President Bola Tinubu to caution the minister.
