At least 600 civil society organizations (CSOs) are calling for the immediate removal of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike following his altercation with a naval officer in Abuja.
The coalition, under the Good Governance Network (GGN), decries Wike’s behavior as “unacceptable, reckless, and dangerous to national unity”.
The confrontation occurred when Wike attempted to access a disputed land in Abuja, allegedly owned by former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, but was blocked by Lieutenant A.M. Yarima, who cited lawful orders from his superiors.
Demands by CSOs:
- Immediate Dismissal: Wike should be sacked from office
- Public Apology: Wike must apologize to President Bola Tinubu, the Armed Forces, and the naval officer involved
- Independent Investigation: Probe into Wike’s conduct and possible disciplinary measures
- Mandatory Training: Civil-military relations training for all political office holders
The CSOs warn that failing to act would send a “dangerous message” that government officials can disrespect national institutions without consequence.
They’re urging President Tinubu to act swiftly and firmly, emphasizing that “the integrity of his administration is at stake”.
