One of the schoolgirls kidnapped from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State has escaped and returned home safely. The girl was among the 25 students abducted by gunmen who attacked the school, killing the vice principal and injuring another staff member ¹ ².
The school principal, Musa Rabi Magaji, confirmed the girl’s safe return, stating she’s “safe and sound”. Another student also managed to escape shortly after the attack. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, describing it as an “assault on the values of safety and learning” ³ ².
Security forces, including the military, are intensifying efforts to rescue the remaining abducted girls. The Senate has also ordered an investigation into the Safe School Fund, questioning why billions budgeted for school security haven’t prevented such attacks ⁴.
