A group of youths in Birnin Kebbi staged a protest on Saturday, December 20, demanding the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) release former Attorney‑General Abubakar Malami, who is being held over an 18‑count probe that includes money‑laundering, abuse of office and alleged terrorism‑financing links . The demonstrators carried signs and shouted slogans calling the detention “politically motivated,” a claim echoed by some opposition figures but denied by the EFCC, which says the investigation is a standard anti‑corruption exercise.
Kebbi State officials have also weighed in, with the governor’s press secretary insisting the state government has no hand in Malami’s case and that the petitions against him originated from outside the state .
