Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, led a protest to the National Assembly in Abuja, demanding the inclusion of real-time electronic transmission of election results in the Electoral Amendment Bill. The protest, dubbed “Occupy National Assembly,” aimed to push lawmakers to explicitly mandate electronic transmission of results from polling units nationwide. Obi emphasized that this move would strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process and prevent irregularities.
The protesters, including activist Aisha Yesufu, were met with heavy security presence but remained peaceful, chanting slogans and displaying solidarity for electoral transparency. The Senate had removed the phrase “real-time” transmission of election results from the bill, sparking criticism from opposition figures and civil society groups.
