Ahmad Salihijo, former Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), exposed corruption in the agency, leading to the ongoing prosecution of senior officials. Salihijo was appointed MD by President Muhammadu Buhari in December 2019 but suspended in March 2024 by President Bola Tinubu.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigation revealed misappropriation of N12.7 billion, including N1.2 billion siphoned through eight staff in the accounts department. Salihijo had raised concerns over irregular disbursements, citing unusual payment activities through the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS). ¹ ² ³
The EFCC also discovered 37 bank accounts linked to Salihijo’s Biometric Verification Number (BVN), contradicting his asset declaration. Several REA officials have been arraigned, and assets have been frozen or forfeited.
