Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has accused his former deputy, Aminu Abdussalam, of secretly plotting to remove him from office and take over as governor. Yusuf made the allegation while hosting a group of praise singers at the Government House in Kano, stating that Abdussalam’s actions were an attempt to depose him and occupy the seat.
According to Yusuf, Abdussalam, also known as Gwarzo, resigned from his position amid impeachment moves by the Kano State House of Assembly, which were later halted. Yusuf claimed he had not seen or received Abdussalam’s resignation letter, questioning why he was not given the opportunity he reportedly sought.
The governor expressed disappointment over the situation, stating that Abdussalam’s actions were part of a broader plot against his administration. He questioned why Abdussalam was not considered for the governorship ticket, suggesting internal politics may have played a role.
Yusuf also addressed criticism surrounding his recent exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), arguing that his decision was in the best interest of Kano residents. He accused opponents of betrayal, citing lack of consultation with Kwankwasiyya movement members before key decisions.
The governor maintained that his administration remains focused on governance, with credible individuals showing interest in the vacant deputy governorship position. He emphasized that his actions were guided by the need to prevent uncertainty for millions of Kano residents.
Abdussalam has not publicly responded to the allegations, leaving questions about the circumstances surrounding his resignation. The political fallout continues to reverberate in Kano State.
Yusuf’s accusations highlight the intense political rivalry within the state, with implications for the upcoming elections.
