Tragedy struck Yancibi Village in Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State after a 45-year-old man and his 15-year-old daughter lost their lives in an abandoned dry well.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi. According to the agency, the victims were identified as Abubakar Abdullahi and his daughter, Fiddausi.
The Fire Service said it received a distress call on Monday evening reporting that the father and daughter had fallen into the abandoned well. Firefighters from the Tsanyawa Fire Service Office were immediately deployed to the scene, but rescue efforts were suspended due to darkness and difficult conditions around the well.
An emergency rescue team from the Fire Service headquarters resumed operations on Tuesday morning and successfully recovered the victims from the well. They were brought out unconscious and later confirmed dead.
Preliminary findings indicated that the teenage girl accidentally fell into the abandoned well, while her father entered the well in an attempt to rescue her but also became trapped, leading to the tragic loss of both lives.
The bodies of the deceased were released to the Village Head of Yancibi, Shamsu Sani, for burial in accordance with the family’s wishes.
The Kano State Fire Service sympathised with the bereaved family and urged members of the public to avoid entering wells without proper rescue equipment or trained emergency personnel, warning that such actions could result in avoidable fatalities.
