The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has stated that his administration has completed all preparations to establish the Kano State Police as soon as the amendment of the Constitution of Nigeria is finalized.
He said this new security structure will serve as a unique approach to addressing the security challenges faced in different parts of the state.
The Governor made this known on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Joint Committee on the Fight Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking, held at the Kano Government House.
The event was attended by top government officials, security agencies, and stakeholders in the fight against drug abuse.
According to him, the main objective of establishing the State Police is to strengthen community security, improve community policing, and ensure the protection of lives and property of the people of Kano.
He said the state needs additional security personnel who understand the local terrain in order to respond quickly to problems.
Governor Yusuf emphasized that the State Police will not replace the Nigeria Police Force. Instead, they will work in collaboration with them. He said all the agencies will enforce law and order, gather credible intelligence, and respond to emergencies so that the public can have confidence.
He added that Kano State has a large pool of skilled and experienced personnel in the security sector, along with the necessary political will to implement the plan. The Governor said once the constitutional amendment is approved, the government will immediately begin recruitment and training.
The Governor stated that his administration supports any federal and state initiative that will improve security across Nigeria. He said insecurity is everyone’s problem, and therefore new strategies are needed, including direct involvement of states in managing security in their areas.
In another part of his address, Governor Yusuf inaugurated the Joint Committee on the Fight Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking. He said the rise in drug abuse is one of the factors fueling crime and insecurity, and it is therefore necessary to tackle it at the root.
The Governor urged members of the new committee to work with honesty, integrity, and diligence. He said the success of the committee depends on collaboration among different agencies and on public support in providing information and assisting with law enforcement.
In conclusion, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said his administration will continue to invest in security and the welfare of the people. He expressed confidence that with the establishment of the State Police and the intensified fight against drug abuse, the people of Kano will gain confidence and enjoy a better quality of life.
