The Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has announced the suspension of tomorrow’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise due to the Kano Festival event. This decision aims to allow residents to fully participate in the cultural festival, showcasing the state’s rich heritage and traditions.
The sanitation exercise, usually held on Saturdays, is part of the government’s efforts to promote hygiene, proper waste management, and public health across the 44 Local Government Areas.
Despite the suspension, the government remains committed to its environmental protection drive. The state has been working to improve waste management, with initiatives like the deployment of street sweepers and the construction of public toilets and boreholes in densely populated areas.
The Kano State Government has also introduced new environmental protection laws to combat pollution, including improper waste disposal and open defecation. An eight-week public awareness campaign will educate residents on maintaining a clean environment.
Kano has made significant strides in sanitation, with 26 out of 44 Local Government Areas achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) status. The government aims to achieve a fully ODF state by 2030.
