The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for the immediate suspension and arrest of Senator Francis Fadahunsi, who represents Osun East Senatorial District, over a viral video in which he was allegedly heard making inflammatory remarks ahead of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election.
In a statement, the Executive Secretary of the commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, described the alleged comments as incitement to violence, voter intimidation and a threat to peaceful elections.
He urged the Senate leadership to suspend the lawmaker pending investigation, while calling on the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to arrest and prosecute him if found culpable.According to the commission, the viral video allegedly showed the senator urging supporters to attack members of another political party.
Ojukwu said such statements have no place in a democratic society and warned that authorities must act swiftly to prevent any breakdown of law and order before the election.
The NHRC also directed political parties and their leaders to caution members against making hate speeches, provocative statements or engaging in acts capable of inciting violence.
It stressed that anyone found violating electoral and constitutional provisions should be held accountable under the law.
The commission appealed to residents of Osun State to remain peaceful throughout the election period and report any threats or human rights violations.
It also disclosed that it had established a situation room to monitor, document and respond to incidents related to electoral violence during the governorship poll.
