A suspected child trafficker, Sunday Onome, has confessed to selling his friend’s child for N1.3 million, revealing a cross-state trafficking network now under police investigation. Onome was arrested in Onitsha, Anambra State, alongside his girlfriend and son by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force’s Intelligence Response Unit and Vicious Crime Response Unit.
The operation also led to the rescue of two children believed to be victims of the scheme. Onome told investigators he made N3.6 million from two trafficking jobs. He claimed job loss as a private driver pushed him into the illegal trade. Onome said he got involved with the network through a woman who coordinated operations.
He stated that children were moved across states on phone instructions, with payments sent to his bank account after each handover. His girlfriend allegedly handled logistics, while his son helped transport children to drop-off points. Police arrested them at an Onitsha hotel where Onome was lodged with two children awaiting pickup.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to verify his claims, identify other syndicate members, and map the network’s reach. Police warned that traffickers exploit personal trust and informal networks, stressing that suspects remain innocent until proven guilty.
