A video circulating online shows the Head of Department of History and International Studies at Northwest University, Kano, formerly Yusuf Maitama University, and a visiting lecturer at MAAUN, Maryam Abacha American Nigerian University, being beaten by an angry man. The incident has sparked outrage on social media.
According to claims in the post, the lecturer allegedly kept rejecting the project of a MAAUN student for the past two years. The student further accused him of demanding to have an affair with her in exchange for approving her project.
The student reportedly told her husband about the allegation. The couple then arranged a meeting with the lecturer. On arrival at the agreed location, the man was confronted and beaten, with the video of the incident later posted online.
The video, shared via https://x.com/i/status/2074773188173553750, with additional clips in the comments section, has drawn thousands of views and comments. Many users condemned the alleged behavior while others debated the manner of confrontation.
As of press time, neither Northwest University nor MAAUN has released an official statement on the incident, the identity of the lecturer, or any disciplinary action. Efforts to reach both institutions for comment were ongoing.
The allegation has again brought attention to the issue of sexual harassment and abuse of office in Nigerian universities. The NUC and many institutions have policies against lecturers demanding sexual favors for academic benefits.
Education stakeholders and rights groups are calling for a thorough investigation by both universities and security agencies. They also urged that the studentโs project be reviewed by an independent panel to ensure fairness and that all parties are protected under the law.
While condemning sexual harassment, legal experts also warned against taking the law into personal hands. They advised victims to report such cases to university authorities, police, or relevant agencies to ensure due process is followed.
