Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the 30-day fuel price reduction, accusing the administration of copying a policy without understanding its full implication.
Atiku made the statement at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre during the inauguration of the presidential campaign council.
He likened the Tinubu government’s action to a student who copies his classmate’s answer in an examination, including the classmate’s name, and then demands to be awarded marks thinking he originated the answer.
According to him, Tinubu’s government heard about the subsidy being given to fuel producers but turned the policy into a temporary 30-day measure.
Atiku said: “Wait a minute, Bola… You copied the idea, but you failed to understand the lesson in it.”
He added that Tinubu’s action is similar to a student who copied another person’s answer in an examination and then asks to be given marks thinking he created the answer himself.
Reacting, a political analyst in Abuja, Mallam Sani Abdullahi, said Atiku’s comment shows opposition is watching closely and government should make its fuel policy more sustainable.
Another resident, Mrs. Joy Okonkwo, a civil servant, said Nigerians need permanent price reduction not 30 days relief.
A commercial driver, Musa Danladi, also reacted saying the 30-day discount at NNPC stations will not reach ordinary drivers unless properly monitored.
The Presidency is yet to respond to Atiku’s remarks as at the time of filing this report.
