Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy will remain fragile unless anchored on strong institutions, rule of law, and internal democracy within political parties. He lamented the absence of clear ideological differences among parties, which has weakened democratic culture and encouraged politically motivated defections.
Ganduje stressed that weak institutions are a major contributor to corruption in Nigeria, and citizens should stop blaming politicians for embezzlement. Instead, the system that allows such practices should be held accountable. He also highlighted the importance of internal democracy within parties to reduce tension and factionalization
The APC chairman has been promoting internal democracy and encouraging dialogue to strengthen the party. He believes that the party’s growth and Nigeria’s democratic progress depend on robust institutions and clear ideological differences among parties .
Ganduje’s comments come amid concerns about the country’s slide towards a one-party state, with several opposition politicians defecting to the APC. He argues that a one-party system isn’t inherently problematic if it reflects Nigerians’ wishes, citing China’s example.
Critics, however, warn that a one-party system could undermine Nigeria’s democratic journey and lead to violent chaos. They emphasize the importance of maintaining a multi-party system to ensure healthy competition and representation.
The debate highlights the need for Nigeria to strengthen its democratic institutions and promote internal democracy within parties.
