The Kano State House of Assembly is set to investigate allegations surrounding the alleged diversion of ₦308 million reportedly allocated for special prayer programmes during the administration of former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
The development followed a petition submitted to the Assembly by the civil society organisation, One Kano Agenda, calling for a thorough investigation into the management and utilisation of the funds.
The petition reportedly raised questions over how the money was approved, released and eventually utilised, while urging lawmakers to invite relevant individuals connected to the matter to provide clarification.
Among those expected to feature prominently in the investigation is Sheikh Musa Falaki, who had raised allegations concerning the handling of the funds. The Assembly is expected to seek his explanation as part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged financial transactions.
Former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has also been mentioned in connection with the allegations.
The investigation is expected to provide an opportunity for him and other relevant officials to respond to the claims and present their own accounts of events.
The controversy centres on funds reportedly voted for spiritual and special prayer activities, with questions being raised over whether the money was used strictly for the purpose for which it was appropriated.
The House of Assembly’s intervention is expected to determine whether there was any breach of financial regulations or other wrongdoing in the approval, disbursement and utilisation of the funds.
The petitioners have urged lawmakers to conduct the investigation without bias and make their findings public, arguing that transparency and accountability are essential when public funds are involved.
As the probe gets underway, attention is expected to focus on the evidence that will be presented before the Assembly. The investigation could ultimately clarify the circumstances surrounding the ₦308 million and establish whether the allegations against the individuals involved have any basis.
Meanwhile, Gwarzo is presently NDC gubernatorial Candidate under the influence of Kwankwaso.
