Prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Nuru Khalid has expressed concern over recent remarks made by Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, describing the comments as inappropriate and capable of generating unnecessary controversy.
Sheikh Nuru Khalid made the remarks during an interview with BBC Hausa, while reacting to statements by Sheikh Jingir that have continued to attract public debate across Nigeria.
A few days ago, Sheikh Jingir used the term “infidels” while referring to some politicians during his advocacy for Nigerians to support an exclusively Muslim presidential ticket.
His comments have since generated reactions from different quarters, particularly amid ongoing political discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Reacting to the controversy, Sheikh Nuru Khalid questioned the appropriateness of the language used, stressing the importance of responsible and careful choice of words when discussing sensitive religious and political matters.
He noted that statements by prominent religious figures can have a significant influence on public opinion and should therefore be handled with caution.
The debate comes at a time when religion, politics and questions surrounding power-sharing remain highly sensitive issues in Nigeria. The full interview with Sheikh Nuru Khalid is available on BBC Hausa, where he provides further explanation of his position on Sheikh Jingir’s remarks.
