….Minister, Mohammed Idris, mourns late Bashir Chedi, recalls decades-long friendship.

KADUNA — Mohammed Abdullahi Awal, Public Relations Officer of Northern Nigerian Development Company (NNDC) Plc, has emerged Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Kaduna State Chapter, following the expiration of the tenure of the previous exco’s.
Awal emerged at the chapter’s fresh election conducted in Kaduna after the dissolution of the former executive council whose tenure had elapsed. His emergence is seen as a recognition of his experience, professional competence and contributions to the public relations profession, as he assumes responsibility for leading the Kaduna chapter of the institute.
The leadership transition formed part of activities surrounding a major programme organised by the NIPR Kaduna State Chapter in honour of the late Bashir Adamu Chedi, a respected media conglomerate and public relations practitioner. The programme, which commenced with a symposium, Friday 28/08/2026, end 29/08/2026 at former, Millenim Hall close to NFDAC, Kaduna, also featured a book launch and a mentorship session designed to celebrate Chedi’s legacy and encourage the development of younger professionals.
The event attracted prominent figures from Nigeria’s information, public relations and broadcasting sectors, including the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris(NIPR) Other notable personalities included senior officials of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mal. Jibrin Adace Baba, Prof. Sule Ya’u Sule, of Mass communication Faculty, BUK, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), and the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), with NAN Managing Director Ali M. Ali among those in attendance.
Speaking at the event, Kaduna State Commissioner for Information, Dr Ahmed Maiyaki, paid tribute to the late Chedi, describing him as a mentor who devoted considerable attention to grooming younger professionals. Maiyaki said Chedi’s influence went beyond his personal achievements, stressing that his commitment to mentoring and encouraging others had helped to prepare a new generation of professionals in the media and communication industry.
Maiyaki said the most meaningful way to preserve Chedi’s legacy was to sustain the culture of mentorship, professionalism and knowledge transfer for which he was known. He urged practitioners to continue investing in younger professionals and creating opportunities through which experience and expertise could be passed from one generation to another.
In an emotional tribute, Minister Mohammed Idris described the death of Chedi as a painful loss, recalling their decades-long friendship which, according to him, had grown into a relationship akin to family. The minister joined other speakers in celebrating Chedi’s professional accomplishments, his commitment to mentoring others and the enduring relationships he built throughout his career.
Under the newly constituted NIPR Kaduna State Chapter executive, Mohammed Abdullahi Awal will serve as Chairman, while Bassey Okon is Vice Chairman and Adeleke T. Saheed is Secretary. Jamilu Zakari Muhammad is Assistant Secretary/ICT Officer; Nancy Awuni Audu, Treasurer; Mercy Eyum Ogbu, Financial Secretary; Shettima Mohammed, Auditor; Latifah Ismail, Public Relations Officer; and Asmau Gwamna, Welfare Officer. Alhaji Musa Bashir and Malam Haroon Malami will serve as Statutory Ex-Officio members, while AbdulAzeez Abdullahi is the Elected Ex-Officio member.
