KANO — Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has led the defection of 136,000 members of the Kwankwasiyya movement to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The defectors, who were received into the APC at a gathering in Kano, declared their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Yusuf ahead of the 2027 elections.
The development marks a major political realignment in Kano, where the Kwankwasiyya movement has maintained a strong political presence over the years.
Speaking during the event, Governor Yusuf welcomed the new members into the APC and urged them to work together with existing party members to strengthen the party at the grassroots.
He said the mass defection demonstrated growing confidence in the APC and its leadership, while calling on party supporters to remain united ahead of the 2027 elections.
The defectors also pledged their loyalty to President Tinubu and expressed their readiness to mobilise support for the APC across the state. Their decision to leave the Kwankwasiyya movement is expected to generate further debate over the changing political landscape in Kano ahead of the 2027 elections.
Political observers said the development could have significant implications for the strength and structure of political parties in the state, particularly at the grassroots level.
