The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a young man who allegedly attacked Islamic cleric, Sheikh Musa Lukwa, shortly after the Jumat prayer in Sokoto.
The incident reportedly occurred after the Friday congregational prayer, when the suspect allegedly launched an attack on the cleric, leaving Sheikh Lukwa injured.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, said the suspected attacker was apprehended by some followers of Sheikh Lukwa shortly after the incident.
Rufa’i, however, said the suspect was subsequently killed by the cleric’s followers before the police could take him into custody.
He added that Sheikh Musa Lukwa was receiving medical treatment at the Sokoto Specialist Hospital following injuries sustained during the attack.
The police spokesman said no arrest had so far been made in connection with the violence, stressing that the command had taken necessary measures to prevent the situation from escalating.
According to him, security operatives have been deployed to maintain peace and ensure that the incident does not trigger further violence in the state.
Rufa’i further disclosed that the police had commenced investigation into the incident to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and determine the motive behind it.
He said the investigation would also identify all persons who may have participated in the violence, assuring residents that the command would take appropriate action based on the outcome of its probe.
