The Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is experiencing internal strife following a warning letter to Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Ata, over alleged unguarded comments on party affairs. The party accused Ata of making public statements that could “provoke misunderstandings and disunity among members” and warned that continued conduct of this nature could lead to sanctions ¹ ² ³.
Ata had criticized the reappointment of APC Kano chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, suggesting it could weaken the party’s prospects. He reportedly said he might leave the party if Abbas remained in office, but later clarified that his comments were intended to promote party unity and accused some media outlets of misrepresenting his statements.
The APC leadership emphasized that internal affairs are the preserve of designated spokespersons and warned Ata to refrain from making public comments that could be misinterpreted as official party positions. The party acknowledged Ata’s right to support any aspirant but reminded him that his cabinet position requires him to strengthen unity within the party ⁴ ⁵ ⁶.
The warning has sparked concerns about the party’s internal dynamics, with analysts suggesting that Ata’s influence and public statements could impact the party’s reconciliation efforts and preparations for the 2027 general elections ³.
