Garba Shehu, former presidential spokesperson, revealed that late ex-President Muhammadu Buhari approved the removal of Hadiza Bala Usman as Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) despite their close personal relationship. This decision followed a recommendation by former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, who alleged financial impropriety, specifically that NPA failed to remit ₦165 billion operating surplus to the federal government under Bala Usman’s leadership.
Shehu explained that Buhari acted on Amaechi’s recommendation, prioritizing institutional procedure over personal loyalty. An administrative panel later cleared Bala Usman of wrongdoing, sparking debate over her removal. Bala Usman attributed the conflict to disagreements over major NPA contracts, accusing Amaechi of pushing for contract extensions without due process, which Amaechi denies.
