Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has reinstated Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano, reversing the enthronement by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in 2020. Few days after, the defection Abbah announced Sanusi legitimate Emir.
The reinstatement follows the signing of the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 into law, which abolished the five emirates created by Ganduje’s administration.
However, another twist today by Alhaji Aminu Babba Danagundi, a kingmaker and Sarkin Dawaki Babba of Kano Emirate, insists that Aminu Ado Bayero remains the legitimate Emir, citing the ongoing legal proceedings.
Danagundi argues that removing Bayero through political consensus is unrealistic, given the matter is before the Supreme Court.
The controversy has sparked mixed reactions, with some residents supporting Sanusi’s reinstatement, while others express concerns about the politicization of traditional institutions.
Governor Yusuf has dismissed speculation about reversing Sanusi’s reinstatement, emphasizing that the emir’s position remains secure.
