Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Governor of Kano State, has defected from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the need for strategic alignment to secure federal projects and other benefits for Kano.
This move has sparked controversy, with some attributing it to Yusuf’s desire for a second term, while others see it as a bid to distance himself from his political mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, THE NORTHERN STAR ONLINE revealed
Kwankwaso, who had backed Yusuf’s governorship bid, is reportedly seeking the presidential or vice-presidential slot in the 2027 elections and feels that Yusuf’s defection undermines his ambitions.
However, Yusuf maintains that his decision is driven by the need for Kano’s development and stability, rather than personal ambition.
*The Rationale Behind the Defection*
Yusuf’s move is seen as a strategic attempt to tap into the federal government’s resources and support, which he believes will boost Kano’s development. By aligning with the ruling APC, Yusuf aims to secure improved infrastructure, security, and economic investments for the state .
*Kwankwaso’s Ambition*
Kwankwaso, on the other hand, is determined to secure a top spot in the 2027 elections, either as president or vice-president. He has stated that he will only consider aligning with a party that offers him one of these positions .
