ABUJA — The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has disclosed that more than 40 personnel of the anti-graft agency have been dismissed for corruption and financial malpractice since he assumed office.
Olukoyede made the disclosure while highlighting the commission’s efforts to strengthen internal discipline and ensure that its personnel uphold the same standards of integrity expected in the fight against corruption.
According to him, the dismissals demonstrate that the EFCC would not shield its own officials when credible evidence establishes wrongdoing, stressing that the commission must maintain public confidence in the discharge of its responsibilities.
The EFCC chairman said corruption within an anti-corruption agency could undermine its credibility and weaken the effectiveness of its investigations and prosecutions.
He explained that personnel found to have engaged in corrupt practices or other forms of financial malpractice were subjected to appropriate disciplinary procedures, which could result in dismissal from service.
Olukoyede maintained that the commission’s commitment to accountability applies to all personnel, regardless of their position or level of responsibility within the organisation.
He said the measures were part of broader efforts to reform the agency, improve professional standards and ensure that officers assigned to investigate financial crimes do not become involved in the very offences they are mandated to combat.
The EFCC chairman further stressed the importance of ethical conduct, professionalism and transparency among its personnel, noting that the public expects the commission to lead by example in the fight against corruption.
Olukoyede’s disclosure comes amid continued calls for stronger institutional mechanisms to tackle corruption and financial crimes in Nigeria.
He reaffirmed the commission’s determination to enforce discipline internally while pursuing its mandate against financial and economic crimes across the country.
