Young thugs involved in phone snatching have been met with violent reprisals in Kano, with some being beaten and their tricycles set on fire.
This is a response to the rising cases of phone snatching, which has led to fatalities and left many residents living in fear.
In one incident, youths in Sharada area of Kano burnt a tricycle allegedly used by phone snatchers, and handed the suspects over to the police.
The Kano State government has taken steps to address the issue, deploying 1,050 security operatives to 52 identified hotspots and launching Operation Kukan Kura to combat phone snatching and thuggery.
Similarly, Over 300 suspects have been arrested, and many have been found with stolen phones and illicit drugs .
The root causes of phone snatching include drug abuse, unemployment, and marginalization, with many youths involved in the crime being between 15 and 27 years old.
