Senator Rufai Sani Hanga, representing Kano Central Senatorial District, has explained that growing disagreements over his empowerment programmes and political activities led to his strained relationship with former Kano State Governor and Kwankwasiyya leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Hanga, who spoke during an interview with Dan’uwa Rano TV, said the disagreement became pronounced after he organised a major empowerment programme for his constituents, where vehicles, rice, fertiliser, grinding machines and other items were distributed.
He said Kwankwaso, who had initially indicated interest in attending the event, later left after prayers and did not return.
According to the senator, Kwankwaso subsequently confronted him over the programme, alleging that the large-scale distribution was attracting public praise for Hanga’s performance as a senator.
Hanga said he apologised and assured his former political leader that he was willing to resolve any misunderstanding between them.
The lawmaker further alleged that Kwankwaso had previously sent emissaries to request that some individuals benefit from his empowerment schemes.
He cited a request involving a vehicle for a beneficiary from Shanono, saying he eventually provided the vehicle after being informed that the beneficiary’s car had been damaged in an accident during a political campaign.
Hanga said the developments convinced him that mutual respect in their relationship had deteriorated, adding that he believed Kwankwaso was uncomfortable with the scale of his empowerment activities and growing public profile.
He also attributed his failure to secure a return ticket to the National Assembly to the deteriorating relationship, saying Kwankwaso, whom he described as the “Jagora” of the movement, was unhappy with his performance and political activities.
