Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has filed a motion at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to vacate an interim order directing the seizure of 57 properties allegedly linked to him. Malami’s lawyer, Joseph Daudu, revealed that his client earned N374m from salaries, N10.17bn from private businesses, and N958m as gifts from personal friends.
Malami declared his income sources in his asset declaration filed with the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), which includes:
– N374,630,900 million from salaries, estacodes, severance allowance, and others
– N574,073,000 from income generated through disposed assets
– N10,017,382,684 turnover from businesses
– N2,522,000,000 loans to businesses
– N958,000,000 traditional gifts from personal friends
– N509,880,000 realised from the launch and public presentation of a book titled, “Contemporary Issues on Nigerian Law and Practice
Malami argues that the properties in question were acquired from legitimate sources and not from proceeds of crime. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had obtained an interim order to seize the properties, alleging they were acquired with suspicious wealth.
The court is expected to rule on Malami’s application to vacate the interim order.
