The Gombe State Government has embarked on a street naming and numbering project aimed at improving emergency services, governance, and revenue generation. The initiative aligns with the Nigerian National Street Addressing Standards and Guidelines of NIPOST, 2017.
The project involves comprehensive geospatial data capture and the establishment of a digital addressing infrastructure to support an effective street naming and house numbering system across Gombe State. This will ensure every street and property in Gombe Metropolis can be easily identified and located, enhancing emergency response for security agencies, health services, and fire-fighting operations.
According to Dr. Kabiru Usman Hassan, Director-General of GOGIS, the initiative is not just an infrastructure project but a foundational system for effective governance, security planning, economic activity, and inclusive urban development.
The project has two components: synergy and geospatial infrastructure, which will be installed at the Gombe Geographic Information System (GOGIS) centre to support street naming and house numbering linked to the state’s digital mapping platform.
The current phase focuses on the metropolitan area, while subsequent phases may be completed by future administrations due to time constraints. Local contractors are being engaged to promote indigenous capacity and local development.
The Gombe State Government has approved N5 billion for the project, which is expected to be completed before the end of 2026. The initiative is part of the state’s ongoing land administration and urban governance reforms.
Residents are expected to benefit from improved address identification, easier navigation, and enhanced security. The project will also support businesses and logistics, strengthen urban planning and infrastructure management, and provide residents with clear, verifiable addresses for documentation, utilities, and digital services.
