The Nigerian Senate is experiencing a dramatic turn of events as Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has moved a motion asking all senators to vote individually on the clause mandating real-time electronic transmission of election results.
Immediately after Abaribe’s motion, Deputy Senate President rushed to meet Senate President Akpabio, causing a stir in the chamber.
According to reports, the controversy surrounds the removal of the phrase “real-time” from the Electoral Bill 2026, which has sparked concerns about the transparency and credibility of future elections. Senator Abaribe has insisted that the Senate had approved electronic transmission of results, but the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, defended the removal, citing potential disruptions to elections due to network failures or power outages .
Thirteen senators, led by Abaribe, have maintained that the Senate passed the clause on electronic transmission of results, and they are urging Nigerians to hold their lawmakers accountable.
The House of Representatives has already endorsed real-time transmission, and the controversy has sparked outrage among opposition parties and civil society organizations.
The Senate’s Votes and Proceedings will ultimately determine the chamber’s true position on the matter. Until then, the drama continues to unfold.
