Aminu Tambuwal, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives and previous Governor of Sokoto State, has officially relinquished his membership in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and has now aligned himself with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Tambuwal cited the PDP’s ongoing internal turmoil, persistent leadership disputes, and escalating divisions as the primary catalysts for his departure.
He announced his move on the social media platform X in the early hours of Thursday. Tambuwal confirmed that he had formally notified his ward chairman of his resignation in writing before officially joining the ADC, bringing along his associates and supporters.
“Today, following extensive deliberation and discussions, I have formally resigned my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party, and this resignation has been conveyed in writing to my ward chairman,” he stated.
While expressing gratitude for the PDP’s role in his political journey, which saw him serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives and complete two terms as Sokoto State Governor, Tambuwal indicated that the party’s internal decay rendered continued affiliation unsustainable.
“The continuous internal crisis, disagreements among leaders, and the widening rifts within the PDP have made it exceedingly challenging to remain a member. These circumstances have unfortunately eroded the unity and focus that once characterized the party, compelling this decision,” he elaborated.
Explaining his choice of the ADC as his new political affiliation, Tambuwal conveyed his conviction that the party offers a more robust avenue for Nigeria’s democratic advancement.
“I am persuaded that this decision is driven by my conviction that Nigeria requires a more formidable political entity founded on integrity, accountability, inclusivity, and a steadfast dedication to national progress,” he declared, reiterating his commitment to democratic principles, justice, and national cohesion.
Tambuwal’s move comes on the heels of several other notable politicians joining the ADC, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi, thereby solidifying the ADC’s standing as a growingly credible opposition force as the nation approaches the next election cycle.
