A Sokoto housewife has poured hot melted butter on her husband’s genitals, leaving him with severe burns, after accusing him of speaking with another woman on the phone on Thursday.
The victim, Bello Abubakar, who resides in the Yar Gabas area of Sokoto metropolis, denied the allegation, insisting he was not involved in any inappropriate relationship.
He attributed his wife’s action to what he described as a spiritual condition, saying she had been battling some personal issues lately.
Abubakar narrated that the attack occurred after he returned from the mosque following Subhi prayers.
“I left home for the mosque to perform Subhi prayer. After I finished, I slept there. I later woke up around 8am and returned home. On arrival, I met her crying, and I asked my wife what was wrong, but she refused to respond,” he said.
He added that he had performed ablution and was reciting the Qur’an when he was called to fix an electrical appliance at an office nearby.
“As I was about to leave, she asked me to wait for her. I was lying on the bed naked when she came in holding a cup containing melted butter,” he said.
“I didn’t suspect anything harmful because whenever her condition relapses, she usually takes a cup to pray over water and drink.”
“Suddenly, I felt something hot on my private part and I screamed. When I checked my hand, it was already burnt too.”
Abubakar said he sustained severe burns across his body from the scalding attack, but that his condition was improving following medical attention at a specialist hospital in Sokoto.
A senior brother of the victim, Tasiu Abubakar, said the couple had been living peacefully before the incident.
He, however, disclosed that the wife’s mother had earlier opposed the marriage, raising suspicion that she may have influenced her daughter to carry out the attack.
Tasiu added that both families had since committed to reconciliation and agreed not to pursue legal action.
Efforts to reach the wife or her relatives for comments were unsuccessful.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai, said he would look into the matter and revert with details, but had not done so as of the time of filing this report.
