Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has warned that the commission needs to be careful to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
Jega, former VC at Usmanu Danfodiyo University sokoto thereby, emphasized that premature election campaigns undermine the electoral process and could pose serious threats to the 2027 elections if left unchecked.
He recommended explicit definition of premature campaign offences, attaching severe penalties, and holding candidates and parties liable for activities of third-party campaigners .
Jega’s warning comes amid concerns over rising voter apathy and the need for electoral reforms to ensure credible elections.
He stressed that Nigeria’s democracy risks collapse without electoral integrity and urged stakeholders to prioritize laws enhancing transparency in campaign financing, voter registration, and result management.
