Murtala Sule Garo is reportedly the top contender for the Deputy Governor position in Kano State, backed by influential figures, including former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Garo, a former Commissioner for Local Government, has been facing corruption charges alongside Ganduje and others, related to the diversion of local government funds amounting to over ₦57.4 billion.
The proposed appointment has sparked controversy, with civil society groups, including 4ward Kano Group, raising objections. They argue that elevating Garo to the deputy governor position would undermine public confidence in governance and accountability, given the ongoing legal issues.
Garo’s nomination has also faced resistance from influential political blocs within the state, citing concerns about political balance and zoning. Despite this, sources indicate that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is making efforts to reconcile warring factions and arrive at a consensus candidate.
The development has sparked intense political maneuvering, with various stakeholders pushing for their preferred candidates. Other contenders for the position include Jibril Isma’il Falgore, Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, and Kabiru Ado Lakwaya, former Commissioner for Youths.
The governor is expected to make a decision soon, amidst mounting pressure from the Presidency and party leaders. The outcome of this development is being closely watched, as it may have significant implications for Kano State politics.
It could be recalled that The Northern Star online newspapers has revealed the loyalty and strong investigation that Garo ‘s chances to be Deputy Governor is reported as arranged by top politicians as only solutions.
