A military airstrike hit a weekly market in Jilli village, located along the Borno-Yobe border, killing at least 30 people and injuring many more.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening, April 11, 2026, at the popular Jilli Market, which is situated between Gubio and Geidam areas.
Eyewitnesses told The Northern Star online news that four fighter jets carried out the attack, with some estimating that over 56 people were killed.
The airstrike was reportedly targeting suspected Boko Haram insurgents who had gathered in the area.
However, the bombs hit the crowded market instead, causing widespread panic and destruction.
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched an investigation into the incident, with the Chief of Air Staff directing an immediate activation of the Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation Cell (CHAI-Cell) to probe the allegations.
Amnesty International has condemned the airstrike, calling it “unlawful” and “outrageous”. The organization is urging the Nigerian authorities to investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and concern, with many calling for greater accountability and protection of civilians in military operations.
