Aides to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, including his spokesperson Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, have been released on bail by the Department of State Services (DSS) after being detained for four hours in their custody.
THE NORTHERN STAR ONLINE REPORTS that the DSS acted on a petition filed by Kwankwasiyya Movement, alleging cyber crimes, intimidation, and defamation against its leaders and members.
The petition, dated April 10, 2026, claimed the aides engaged in online activities damaging Kwankwaso’s reputation.
Those released on bail include Salisu Yahaya Hotoro, Ibrahim Adam, and Nuhu Dambazau, alongside Dawakin Tofa.
The show of shame emerged few months after the defection of Abbah Kabiru Yusuf to APC which him 43 years bond turned betrayal.
However, our online Correspondent in Kano revealed that “Dawakin Tofa” confirmed his release on Facebook, stating he didn’t initially grasp the gravity of the situation but is willing to meet Kwankwaso and apologize before court proceedings.
He attributed his inclusion in the petition to a song commissioned from APC praise singer Dauda Kahutu, aka Rarara, containing innuendos against Kwankwaso.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement had accused the aides of cyberbullying, online harassment, and defamation targeting prominent figures, including Kwankwaso, former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, and Senator Rufai Sani Hanga.
Salisu Hotoro, one of those detained, suggested they were not the only ones attacking Kwankwasiyya online and claimed they were also victims of cyberbullying by the movement’s supporters.
The development stems from a deepening rift between Governor Yusuf and his former mentor Kwankwaso, with aides on both sides trading accusations of cyberbullying and defamation online.
The DSS Kano command detained the aides for about four hours before granting bail on self-recognition. The Kwankwasiyya Movement plans to present the matter before court, with arraignment scheduled for Tuesday.
Dawakin Tofa, Hotoro, Adam, and Dambazau were questioned over allegations of coordinated online attacks against Kwankwaso and his allies. The petition listed attacks on several prominent figures within the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
The release indicates investigations are ongoing, with no conclusions reached. The DSS and Kano State Government have not issued official statements on the matter.
The incident reflects rising political tensions online between Kwankwasiyya Movement supporters and those backing the Kano State Government.
Kwankwaso’s petition accused the aides of using social media platforms to harass and defame him and his supporters.
The aides were released shortly after initial questioning by the DSS, suggesting the matter may proceed to court. ⁷
Legal proceedings will determine the outcome of the allegations.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement urged the DSS to investigate and take action against those found culpable, citing threats to public peace and political stability.
Observers interpret the release as an indication that the matter is still under investigation, with no immediate findings against the aides.
The petition against the aides was filed under the Kwankwasiyya Movement, with Kwankwaso stating he will present the matter before court.
