A Kaduna State High Court has adjourned ruling on former Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s bail application in a case brought against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The court will review the application and deliver its ruling in the first week of June.
The ICPC had arraigned El-Rufai on allegations of corruption and abuse of office during his tenure as governor. He was arrested and detained by the commission, prompting his lawyers to file a bail application.
The court’s decision to delay the ruling has sparked reactions from various quarters, with some calling for El-Rufai’s release on bail while others insist he should remain in custody.
El-Rufai’s lawyers had argued that their client is entitled to bail, citing lack of concrete evidence against him. They also claimed that their client is not a flight risk and would cooperate with the ICPC’s investigation.
However, the ICPC opposed the bail application, stating that El-Rufai’s release could compromise the investigation and potentially influence witnesses.
The ICPC has been investigating El-Rufai’s administration over alleged corruption and mismanagement of state funds. The former governor has denied any wrongdoing, claiming the charges are politically motivated.
The court’s decision to allow ICPC to continue holding El-Rufai has been seen as a setback for the former governor. If convicted, El-Rufai could face significant penalties, including imprisonment.
The case has generated significant public interest, with many Nigerians following the developments closely. The outcome of the case is eagerly awaited, and it remains to be seen how the court will rule on El-Rufai’s bail application.
