Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has nominated Murtala Sule Garo as the new Deputy Governor of Kano State, following the resignation of Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo. Garo, a seasoned politician with over two decades of experience in elective and appointed positions, is expected to bring stability and strength to the administration.
Garo’s nomination has been met with widespread support from APC stakeholders, with 27 out of 31 stakeholders backing his candidacy. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, Chairman of the House of Representatives Downstream Petroleum Committee, praised Garo’s political outreach and popular support among party ranks.
A 48-year-old seasoned administrator, Garo has served as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor, and elected Kabo Local Government Chairman. He also served as Chairman of ALGON Kano and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
However, Garo’s path to the deputy governorship hasn’t been without challenges. A court case has been filed against his nomination, with plaintiffs urging the Kano State House of Assembly to suspend the screening process pending the determination of the suit. ⁴
Despite this, Governor Yusuf has transmitted Garo’s nomination to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation, citing Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution. ⁵
Garo’s emergence has been hailed as a boost to the administration, with many praising his experience and influence in Kano politics. As the state prepares for the 2027 elections, Garo’s nomination is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the party’s position.
