A Max Air flight headed from Abuja to Katsina made an emergency landing shortly after takeoff on Tuesday, forcing passengers and crew to disembark safely at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
Aviation sources said the crew detected a technical issue mid-air and alerted air traffic control, leading to a decision to return to Abuja as a precaution. The aircraft landed without incident.
Among those on board were several government officials traveling to Katsina for official engagements. They were left stranded at the airport as the airline arranged alternative travel plans.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau have been notified of the incident in line with standard procedure for emergency landings.
Max Air confirmed the diversion and said the safety of passengers and crew remained its priority. The airline stated that engineers were inspecting the aircraft to determine the cause of the issue.
Passengers described the situation as tense but said the crew handled the emergency professionally and kept them informed during the return to Abuja.
Some of the stranded officials said the delay would affect their scheduled meetings in Katsina, and they were awaiting updates on rescheduled flights.
The incident adds to ongoing public scrutiny of domestic airline operations and aircraft maintenance standards, as authorities continue to push for stricter compliance with safety regulations.
