The Kano State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of Maimuna Sani Salisu, a 13-year-old JSS 2 student at St. Louis Secondary School, Kano. A Special Investigation Panel, led by DCP Shehu Idris, has been set up to probe the circumstances surrounding her death.
Maimuna died on June 13 after being taken to International Clinic, Kano, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. The school initially claimed she had a fatal asthma attack, but the family alleges she was flogged and forced to kneel by senior students for refusing to sweep.
The police have invited several individuals for questioning, including three teachers, three senior students, and two witnesses. The investigation is being conducted in collaboration with the Kano State Ministry of Justice to ensure transparency and adherence to the rule of law.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, has promised a thorough and impartial investigation, assuring the family and the public that justice will be served. Anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law, while those exonerated will be cleared.
The incident has sparked concerns about corporal punishment in schools, with the Kano State Government reiterating its ban on such practices. The school’s principal has declined to comment on the matter, citing the ongoing investigation.
Maimuna’s family is seeking justice and a clear explanation of what happened. Her mother, Nusaiba Dan-Sheriff, has expressed her grief and determination to uncover the truth.
The police have appealed to the public to provide any credible information that could aid the investigation, promising confidentiality.
The investigation is ongoing, and the findings will be made public once concluded.
