Dr. Nasiru Gawuna, the Kano Central senatorial candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), is reportedly in talks with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to defect, with negotiations now at the national level. This development comes after Gawuna’s camp sought the ADC governorship ticket for the 2027 election and requested political accommodation for loyalists.
Gawuna, a former All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, resigned from the party in March and joined the NDC in May alongside former Kano State Governor, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso. He accepted the NDC’s Kano Central senatorial ticket, while Aminu Gwarzo became the party’s consensus governorship candidate.
The talks with ADC, however, have sparked speculation about Gawuna’s political future and raised questions about the durability of new alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections. Sources say the decision to escalate discussions to the national level is linked to demands made by Gawuna’s camp, including the governorship ticket and accommodation for associates.
The Kano State Chairman of the ADC, Musa Ungogo, confirmed the development but declined to provide details, saying, “The talks have been shifted to the national level. We just have to wait for the final decision.”
Gawuna’s move is seen as a strategic attempt to secure a strong position in Kano politics ahead of the 2027 elections. His camp is reportedly seeking a favorable deal with the ADC, considering the party’s influence in the state.
The NDC, however, may not take kindly to Gawuna’s reported defection, given his recent acceptance of the senatorial ticket. The party’s reaction and the outcome of the talks will likely shape the political landscape in Kano.
As the situation unfolds, Nigerians are watching closely, eager to see how this drama plays out. Will Gawuna secure the ADC governorship ticket, or will he remain with the NDC
