Chinese authorities have discovered over 300 snakes in a man’s home, valued at more than $4 million. The snakes were found in plastic containers, and the man, identified as Gua, had reportedly converted his home into a snake breeding facility.
The discovery was made after authorities noticed unusually high electricity consumption at Gua’s residence, prompting an investigation. Gua is suspected of breeding and trafficking protected species of snakes without permits.
The snakes have been transferred to a wildlife sanctuary in Taizhou, eastern China, for safekeeping. Gua and his associates have been sentenced to prison, but the length of their sentences has not been disclosed.
The case highlights China’s efforts to combat wildlife trafficking. The country has laws protecting endangered species and cracking down on illegal wildlife trade.
